Barriers to Reentry Persist Post-Ida - Help a JAC Client Recover
One of JAC's reentry clients returned from incarceration in June of this year, and went to live in the Lower Ninth Ward with his grandmother and 2 year old daughter. JAC had helped him secure an on-time release date by clearing an outdated detainer, and eliminated $1,500 in old traffic court fines and fees in Orleans Traffic Court. We were working with him on reducing pre-incarceration fines and fees in Jefferson Parish and helping him apply for a Provisional Driver's License (an option available when a formerly incarcerated person has fees owed to Office of Motor Vehicles that they can't afford to immediately pay) when Hurricane Ida struck his grandmother's home, causing the damage seen to the left to their roof and living room ceiling.
Our client found work on Bourbon Street and has been called to work every day since power was restored to the French Quarter. His grandmother and daughter are safe in locations in another parish, but he has had to stay in the damaged home in order to be close to work. Because of the way FEMA disaster funds work, he is considered a part of the family "household," not permitted to submit his own FEMA application. This is a problem MANY reentering community members face. Because his grandmother has not yet been awarded Temporary Shelter Assistance through the household FEMA application, he has no access to disaster funds for transportation to work, cleaning up, tarping the roof, or repairing the family home.
JAC is helping him with mutual aid applications, but we wanted to do more to help him succeed, thus this appeal. 100% of any funds donated to this fund will go DIRECTLY to our reentry client in the form of financial aid. We know there are many extremely worthy causes right now seeking donations, but thought we would put this out in the universe. Our client states that this storm has separated him from his family, but he remains hopeful that if he can keep working he can make sure his family comes through this and is able to return to a safe and healthy home.
Thank you for whatever you are able to donate, and please forward if you are able!
