Dear Community:
The Louisiana legislature is in full swing, and while physical access to the capitol building may be limited, your voice STILL COUNTS! We are asking you to use your email power today to let the Senate know you care about what is happening in Baton Rouge.
The Louisiana Stop Solitary Coalition (www.lastopsolitary.org) has worked for several years to identify steps toward ending long-term solitary confinement in Louisiana by 2028. This year, we are pursuing legislation (HB 344 - Rep. Landry) to prohibit the use of solitary for currently and recently pregnant women. We know that long stretches of time spent in small cells that are often windowless, unsanitary, and subject to extreme temperatures not only diminishes the human spirit but can also cause real physical and mental consequences. For pregnant women, these harms are significant.
This is only the beginning. The Stop Solitary Coalition will continue our work to end solitary for all vulnerable populations, particularly those with serious mental illness, in the coming years. Please take a few minutes to send this action alert to the members of the Senate in support of HB 344. Thanks to you, the House voted last week to pass this legislation UNANIMOUSLY and with 26 co-sponsors on both sides of the aisle!
Thank you for your time, and we hope you can join us in this ongoing fight to ensure that our government ends this inhumane practice.
HB 344, by Representative Mandie Landry, will eliminate solitary confinement for pregnant women, except for in exigent circumstances. This bill may soon come up for vote on the Senate floor - first, it has to be voted favorably in Committee. With so little time left in the session, we are asking you to contact your Senator NOW!
Please send this action alert to your Senator in support of HB 344. Physical access to the capitol may be limited, but your voice STILL COUNTS!

Thank you so much for contacting your Louisiana state Senator. No woman deserves to spend her pregnancy in solitary confinement, at extreme risk to her pregnancy. Your voice can change that.
